The Great Game or The Big Game is the historical conflict between Great Britain and Russia for supremacy in Central Asia. The Russians tried to push through Turkestan to the Indian Ocean to build an ice-free port. Already in 1807 British agents had reported that Napoleon and Tsar Alexander I had agreed to attack India together and to wrest the British Empire from the subcontinent. Although this plan was never implemented, the British subsequently did everything they could to prevent the expansion of the Tsarist Empire in this area.
The great game lasted from 1813 until at least the October Revolution of 1917, but de facto until 1947 (the year of the British retreat from India).
